20 Aug How to Entrust Innocence — Kazuki Mizuguchi Solo Exhibition
Yūgen and mono no aware, two essential concepts of Japanese aesthetics, speak to a sensitivity toward the subtle emotions and fleeting beauty found in the changing world of nature. A graduate of Musashino Art University’s Japanese Painting program, Kazuki Mizuguchi has long explored lotus flowers, the moon, and plants as recurring motifs. Through diluted ink, muted mineral pigments, and delicate gold, he creates quiet, dreamlike spaces where presence and absence intertwine, revealing a distinctly Eastern sense of beauty.
Having encountered works across museums and art institutions in different places, Mizuguchi’s artistic perspective has gradually shifted from contemplating the impermanence of all things toward a deeper questioning of the self. This solo exhibition, titled How to Entrust Innocence, reflects a Japanese aesthetic pursuit of simplicity and essence. “Innocence” refers to the unadorned nature of the heart, untouched by worldly conventions, while “how to entrust” suggests a quiet search: in a constantly changing world, where can one preserve and place what is pure and true?
In Mizuguchi’s paintings, vivid colors are deliberately restrained. Pale flowers emerge from gray-toned grounds of ink, while softly blurred contours dissolve the boundaries of individual forms. Expansive areas of negative space create a sense of stillness and openness, becoming more than a backdrop for moonlight or lotus ponds—they serve as spaces for the spirit to rest. Branches, a solitary moon, and delicate lotus petals move beyond simple depictions of nature, becoming vessels through which the artist reflects upon his inner self.
While mono no aware is often understood as a sensitivity to the passing of time and the melancholy of impermanence, Mizuguchi’s recent works suggest a quieter transformation that follows this awareness. Flowers may wither and the moon may wane, yet an essential vitality remains within all things. Drawing upon both Japanese and broader Eastern aesthetic traditions, he moves beyond depicting the changing appearance of nature and instead creates, through restraint and subtlety, a contemplative space for viewers to pause and look inward.
Amid the noise of everyday life, we often lose touch with our most authentic selves. Through mineral pigments and diluted ink, Mizuguchi transforms grass, trees, water, and moonlight into places of refuge for the spirit. By lingering before these quiet scenes, viewers may momentarily step away from the distractions of the outside world and rediscover a sense of original purity. In this way, the artist responds to the question at the heart of the exhibition: within nature, and within the spaces between presence and absence, there is always somewhere to entrust and return to one’s true self.
