Wong Sze Wai

Introduction to Wong Sze Wai

Wong Sze Wai was born in Hong Kong in 1990. She received her Master of Fine Arts from the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2020, and her Bachelor of Arts from the same department in 2013. Her work explores the relationship between personal and collective history through memory and imagination, creating landscapes of psychic ruins that delve into the inner world and bear witness to the existence of self-awareness.

Her practice incorporates ancient mural techniques and materials—such as clay, mineral pigments, and ink—to evoke the depth of history and the traces of time. Through layered painting and washing processes, she reflects on the inscription and erasure of memory and history, inviting viewers to imagine and fill in the blanks, transcending time and space to enter a spiritual realm.

Her works often depict abandoned furniture, objects, toys, and artifacts, constructing isolated and tranquil spaces that bring a sense of stillness to the soul. These deserted sites and historical remnants symbolize forgotten and hidden memories, bearing witness to human history and collective memory, and marking the passage of time. Through painting, she captures the complexity of existence and temporality, creating a visual journey through psychic ruins and exploring the interplay of memory, history, and imagination.
