Taisuke Mohri

Introduction to Taisuke Mohri

Taisuke Mohri (b. 1983, Sapporo) is a Japanese artist renowned for his cross-media practice that integrates drawing techniques with conceptual structures. His work has attracted wide attention in Japan and has also gained significant international recognition.

Described by curator Lo Chan Peng as a “Japanese obsessive,” Mohri demonstrates exceptional technical mastery. He renders highly realistic drawn portraits with an extremely fine-tipped instrument, then overlays them with real shattered glass, creating an unstable tension between reality and illusion. This self-disintegrating realism transforms his work into a structural experiment, redefining how seeing operates through cracks, errors, and damage.

The fractures covering the drawings are not decorative but act as a form of “intervention”: they preserve the material presence of glass while infiltrating the visual system of the image. In doing so, three perceptual layers—material reality, pictorial verisimilitude, and abstract fragments of form and color, normally difficult to reconcile—are brought into coexistence within a single image.

Known for his philosophical inquiry into perception, reality, and medium, Mohri’s work confronts viewers with the fragility of vision and prompts a rethinking of the relationship between humans and the world. This presentation not only reveals his deep investigation into the nature of images, but also allows audiences to experience the tension of “becoming” at the intersection of artwork and space.
