Peng Si

Peng Si Biography

Peng Si (b. 1980) graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Since his student days, he has garnered recognition for his works in photography, mixed media, intaglio, and oil painting, earning accolades at the China Oil Painting Exhibition and the National Art Exhibition. His works have been exhibited in locations such as Macau and Columbia University in the United States. He has also held solo exhibitions at venues including the Daegu Art Museum in South Korea, the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Peking University, and the National Art Museum of China.

Peng Si excels in Western painting materials, techniques, and styles, while embodying the charm and ambiance of Eastern aesthetics. Drawing from the light and composition of Rembrandt, he integrates the Chinese style of inquiry and reflection on contemporary themes, akin to ancient steles, and skillfully incorporates the elements of Chinese calligraphy and ink painting into his oil painting forms. This has earned him high praise from art critics for his ability to “Sinicize Western art” and “modernize tradition.”

Beneath the seemingly subtle and tranquil images of his paintings lies a deep, emotive undercurrent marked by restraint and introspection. The elements of desolate seclusion and vast, desolate scenes in his works not only reflect profound contemplation on life and historical insight but also highlight his distinctive and highly identifiable style that is full of tension.
