Introduction to Leung Lok Hei
“When electronic and virtual currencies gradually replace traditional money globally, I want to use coins to remind us of the roles and values of people and things that have existed in our lives in the past.”
Leung Lok Hei, (b.1993, Hong Kong) selects materials for his creations that were once closely related to our lives, highly valued, but have been forgotten in the rapid development of the city. He extensively uses coins as his canvas in his works, blending them into the composition as inseparable visual elements.
His artworks reflect a contemplation on the so-called “norm,” leading audiences to reconsider the imagination of Hong Kong and the impacts and changes in identity faced. Through the flexible use of various media, coupled with personal emotional projection, his works navigate between the seen and unseen, guiding audiences to re-experience the social landscapes that should have been paid attention to but are often overlooked, forming a unique artistic language.
