Kenichiro Ishiguro (b. 1967, Shizuoka) is a master of Japanese realism, renowned for his precise and austere hyperrealist oil paintings. He is currently Professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Hiroshima City University.
Highly regarded by curator Lo Chan Peng, Ishiguro has long been a figure of admiration. Lo reflects: “When I was an art student, Ishiguro was already a towering presence I looked up to. To now bring his original works to Taiwan as a curator feels like a remarkable convergence of fate—this admiration across time is the truest testament to his artistic power.”
Tracing Ishiguro’s artistic trajectory reveals a practice of depth and evolution. His early works, featuring figures in gas masks, explored apocalyptic themes, while his recent practice has expanded into three-dimensional and cyberpunk-inspired forms. Across each phase, his work remains closely tied to Japanese subcultural imagery while continuously reflecting on contemporary social anxieties, embodied experience, and technologically mediated imagination.
In Lo Chan Peng’s view, Ishiguro’s greatest strength lies in his flawless technical mastery. His oil surfaces are as refined as silk, with seamless tonal transitions—qualities comparable only to classical masters such as Ingres and Bouguereau. “Such pictorial texture is exceedingly rare today,” Lo notes. “Like traditional lacquerware refined through dozens or even hundreds of polishings, Ishiguro’s process awakens the spirit of the material. It is an ethic of technique—one that honors material, time, and labor.”
In an era saturated by AI-generated imagery, Ishiguro’s painstaking, brushstroke-by-brushstroke accumulation stands, in Lo’s words, as “a noble resistance—humanity affirming its own existence amid the flood of algorithms.” His artistic value, within the currents of our time, is thus rendered ever more profound.
