Kana Tsumura

Introduction to Kana Tsumura

Kana Tsumura (b. 1998, Hiroshima) is one of the most promising emerging realist artists in contemporary Japan. A graduate of Musashino Art University, she is recognized for her exceptional technical skill and a fresh perspective on still-life painting. Her works have received multiple excellence awards and are highly regarded by collectors and art critics in Japan.

Her practice centers on themes of human will, desire, and the memory of life, with a particular focus on the hand as a key compositional element. Through subtle gestures and postures, hands reveal instinctive inner states as people engage with food, emotions, or everyday actions. Her graduation work, Blue Dinner, in which a blue table interweaves with overlapping hand movements, demonstrates her sensitive command of light, shadow, and the ritualistic qualities of daily life, and is regarded as an important early milestone in her career.

Tsumura’s still-life paintings engage in a philosophical dialogue between “still life” and nature morte. Beyond depicting immobile objects, her works seek to capture “memories of the future,” preserving fleeting moments of beauty—such as blooming flowers or ripe fruit—in a timeless form on canvas.

Despite her young age, Tsumura’s artistic career has developed rapidly. Following the success of her debut solo exhibition in London, she has held a series of significant exhibitions in Japan. With formidable painterly skill, she brings a new philosophical dimension to contemporary still-life painting.
