Chen Hung Hsin

Introduction to Chen Hung Hsin

Chen Hung Hsin (b.1992) graduated from the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at National Taichung University of Education. Equipped with a solid foundation in realistic techniques, his works are known for their delicate style, often depicting flora and fauna as central subjects. Through these themes, he expresses a profound observation of the environment and life itself.

In his visual compositions, Chen utilizes crushed gold leaf or pink foil scattered over deep black backgrounds. This creates a subtle and shimmering luster that emerges from the tranquil darkness—like faint light penetrating a dim space, with floating dust sparkling softly. The result is a quiet yet warm texture. His technique reflects not only a keen mastery of materials but also a nuanced emotional projection.

For Chen, the natural world is a microcosm of society and a projection of inner consciousness. In his artist statement, he describes his artistic journey as a transformation from a hedgehog-like, cautious self into a marten—a predator that remains unafraid even in the face of danger. This transformation stems from constant experiences, contradictions, and collisions, all driven by an ever-curious mind that observes and reflects on all things.
