Introduction to Lai Jing
Lai Jing (b. 1981, Chengdu, China) currently lives and works in Chongqing. During her studies, she quickly distinguished herself, receiving prestigious accolades such as the inaugural “Zhang Xiaogang Graduate Contemporary Art Creation Scholarship” and later earning a master’s degree from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.
Her works blend the classical aesthetics of Chinese literati painting with contemporary visual expression, seamlessly integrating traditional motifs with her personal artistic language. While she adopts silk—one of the most historically significant mediums in Chinese painting—her approach to brushwork, atmosphere, and subject matter transcends convention, expanding the expressive possibilities of ink art. Through the recurring use of mirrors, window frames, and layered compositions, she explores the tension between the “visible and invisible” and “memory and reality.” With a restrained palette and delicate, intricate brushstrokes, she creates subtle, meditative spaces where stillness and movement intertwine, forming a distinctive visual language.
In her solo exhibition, Seeker of the Hidden: Time and Memory in Swaying Moonlight, Lai Jing reconstructs light, space, and memory to guide viewers through an ever-shifting realm between reality and illusion. Her works oscillate between tranquility and paradox, allowing traditional ink painting to refract new light within a contemporary context.
